Hysterectomy
Surgery to remove the uterus and, sometimes, the cervix. When the uterus and part or all of the cervix are removed, the procedure is called a total hysterectomy.
Oophorectomy
Surgical removal of the ovaries; often done at the same time as a hysterectomy.
Laparoscopy
Visualization of the ovaries and the exterior of the Fallopian tubes and uterus by means of the inserting a surgical instrument through a small opening, usually through the belly button. It includes the insertion of a thin, lighted tube (called a laparoscope) through the abdominal wall to inspect the inside of the abdomen and may at times be used to remove tissue samples.
Anterior and Posterior Repair
Surgical re-building of the pelvic floor; the structures that supports the bladder and rectum.
Dilation and Curettage (D&C)
A procedure where a curette is inserted throught he cervix and is used to scrape out the lining or Endometrium.
Hysteroscopy
A tube is inserted throught he cervix to view the inside of the uterus (also called the endometrium).
Tubal Reanastamosis
A surgical procedure where fallopian tubes which have been previously ligated through a sterilization procedure can be reattached for the purpose of attaining pregnancy. This procedure has about a 50% success rate.
Colposcopy
A procedure where the cervix is viewed through a microscope. This is done when the pap smear results showed abnormal cells on the cervix. Biopsies of the cervix are often taken at same time.
Cryotherapy
A procedure where the area on the cervix that shows abnormal cells is frozen by a wand filled with nitrous oxide. The purpose is to destroy the abnormal cells.
Non-Stress Testing
The fetal monitor is applied with straps around the abdomen for the purpose of viewing the fetal heart patterns for signs of stress and indications of uterine contractions.
Intrauterine Insemination
Intrauterine insemination involves the injection of a washed semen specimen directly into the uterine cavity in the hope of increasing the chance of fertilization.
